Gallagher Doc Watson

Gallagher has had a long-standing association with Doc. As early as 1968, Doc and Merle Watson were playing guitars made by J.W. and Don Gallagher. Doc's orginal G-50, affectionately called "Ol Hoss", is currently on display at the Country Music Hall of Fame. In 1974, a guitar was designed for Doc by J.W. Gallagher that incorporated many of the special features Doc was looking for. This model soom became known as the Doc Watson Model.

Just a little more history... Merle Watson requested a cutaway model of the Doc Watson in 1975. Some years later, a cutaway model was made for Doc as well. He refers to it as "Donald". This long standing support of Gallagher Guitars by the Watsons has led Gallagher to donate a Doc Watson Model guitar each year for the winner of the Guitar Contest at Merle Fest.

This particular model is constructed of African Mahogany. The top is Sitka Spruce and the top bracing is scalloped and shaped by hand to produce a powerful, clean tone. The fingerboard and bridge are ebony, for durability and beauty. String vibrations are transmitted to the top by a genuine bone saddle. The strings are secured by chrome Schaller tunners. The purfling and soundhole are herringbone. The back is joined by a "zig-zag" backstrip. The 1 3/4" neck has wide low fast action frets which make this guitar a joy to play. (A 1 11/16" neck is optional).

As with all guitars in our shop, the Gallagher Doc Watson has been examined by our staff for playability and construction, comes with a hard case, and lifetime warranty. If you have any questions regarding this magnificent guitar, email us.
