Vance
Gilbert Concert -- January 11, 2004
|

Music
Folk was thrilled to host Vance Gilbert in concert. As always,
Vance gave a stellar performance full of wit, laughter, and
heart-rending emotion. His songs were the highlight though
including some brand spanking new stuff from his yet-to-be-recorded
next album. Here's some pics from the concert.

Lynne
Reif opened the show for Vance. Lynne has played in St Louis-based
regional bands, Belle Starr and the Stonecutters. She now
is performing in an acoustic trio, Salt of the Earth.
Vance
commented later in the evening that she had a very strong
set, so make sure you get out to see her.

 |
Vance
began the evening with the Sam Cooke song, "A Change
Is Gonna Come" followed with his own "Why Are We
So Cruel?", two highly-charged emotional songs that immediately
set the audience on its heels.

For
those who have seen Vance live, this doesn't seem like a strange
picture at all. Vance changes the shape of his mouth and lips
to alter the tone on his notes and extend their power. This
is one such example of changing the timbre on a particularly
long-held note. |
 |
Vance
performs one of his signature songs, "Icarus By Night." |
 |
Vance
played nearly two hours and certainly left the audience satisfied.
He stayed for quite a while afterwards to sign autographs and
talk songwriting with members of the audience. |
