After
viewing the wood storage area, we took a tour of mandolin
production.
Mandolins
are relatively new to Collings. They made about 225 mandolins
in 2002 with most being an A style. We currently have the
A style in and have been very impressed with its tone and
projection.
To the
left is a wood bender for the F style mandolin. The heated
elements make the process much faster.
|
|
|
Because
production numbers are smaller, the mandolins are still practically
built by hand.
Here,
one of the craftsmen is working on smoothing the neck.
|
|
|
The mandolin
line is Bill Collings' personal project. He's involved everyday
with the production of these instruments.
We had
an opportunity to spend a few minutes with Bill (standing)
during our visit. Bill's energy is contagious to say the least!
His passion for instrument building is unparalleled.

Finish
work on F style mandolins.
|
 |
Because
Collings' standards are so high, much of the machinery used
in production and many of the components of the instruments
are designed and built by Collings. Bill Collings usually
takes the lead role in problem solving and develops the concept
if not the actual machine.
To the
left is a good example. Collings designs and manufacturers
the tailpieces for his mandolins in house.
