We went to visit Collings back in March. While most of us have seen at least some aspects of guitar making, we were excited to get a first hand look at a large scale production facility. We were especially interested in Collings techniques because we've been so impressed with their quality and attention to detail.

As the picture at left shows, their exterior was somewhat unassuming. Their entire facility facade was pretty non-descript and could have been in just about any industrial court in the country.

We were happy to put a face with the guy we've dealt with for years, Steve McCreary. In many ways, Steve is the guy that makes it happen everyday. In addition to his duties as a sales guy, he oversees production on all of the guitars.
Tim Nelson is a recent addition to Collings and will soon be taking over all of the sales duties from Steve. We're looking forward to a visit from Steve later in the year and hope to have a Collings workshop then.

As we began the tour, we started with the woods. These stacks of wood were waiting to be loaded in the kiln. Collings kiln dries their wood before production like most builders.

The woods on the left are destined to be back and/or sides in guitars.

These larger pieces will be planed for guitar backs.
